Blue button icons signify essential levels
Yellow ones signify optional ones
Flags signify completed levels (as opposed to swords which are ones you are still doing)

Several years later, and a thread necro on a completely different subject, except that it has to do with the Prologue:

Several of the screens shown in the Prologue are from events I recognise from the first three games (KDD, JTRH, TCB). None, of course, are from GatEB, which was not Beethro's adventure...

But where do the other events come from, and what made those events "canon", that they are presented as having definitely happened, as part of Beethro's backstory?

Several of the Smitemaster's Selections are part of the canon (and have always been treated as canon, even before TSS came out). The events included in the TSS prologue are from Devilishly Dangerous Dungeons of Doom and Finding the First Truth.
