The title, theme, and first post sum it up nicely - this is a group of levels that would have fit in nicely as bonus levels in TSS. Lots of new scripted elements, including one that started out as a joke a long time ago but proves to provide some really good puzzles. 9/10 would play more.

Unfortunately even my 8-core Xeon can't keep up with the scripting requirements for Conway's Game of Life. Might have to wait for a new machine...

Are others having problems even walking through the rooms on this level?

I have an eight core 3.5 GHz with 16 GB Ram and even the room with the glider gun is reasonably fast.

Strange - a cellular automaton should require a fast CPU, which you have.

I have a very fast graphics board but that should not really matter.

The only time my cheapish laptop has especially noticeable lag with the Conways is with the pulsar in 1N. As established in TSS, if there are significant problems, temporarily reducing unlimited undo to only a few moves should help.

If this fails, for this hold players have been allowed to vote with their feet and leave a single level uncompleted while still conquering the hold.

I have changed the undo level to unlimited and don't see any performance problems.

Well, my PC has an MS performance index of 7.8 (7.9 is the maximum) :)

Even setting undo level to 0 doesn't help, unfortunately. The level is pretty much unplayable. Awesome hold though!

In the first screen, use UP/Down to select the level you want to play, and then press the "Special command" key to enter the level.

"Special command", by default, is the "." key (you can check it in setting-> commands).

I don't know exactly what is the "special command". Anyway you will need in this hold: in "A hook of my Own", there some scripting implementing a sort of teleport in the direction you are facing when you press the special command key.

I have solved Conway: 1N and now I am watching my demo and see where I can optimize it.

Even on my super fast system selecting and watching a demo is a nightmare ;(

I have the impression that the animated preview is the problem:



It would be nice if the animation could be switched off. Even with less complicated rooms it is sometimes very slow (before it starts) and annoying.

I have figured out how to solve 1N1E but I cannot finished it before DROD crashes.

That's a joke about how the Bargain Bin level is a theme-less mash of leftover rooms. It's the level entrance text, not a real error message.

I just noticed that I forgot to post a comment on this hold.

Normally I do not like scripting.
However, this hold is fabulous. To my shame I have to admit that I have not solved all rooms :(

Anyway, PLAY THIS HOLD. The game of life level may be hard for your CPU...

I give it 7.5 for difficulty and 10 (yes, ten) for fun.

Yes, this hold is fantastic and really shows off the enormous potential in scripting.

There is a scripting bug on the unstable projection in Trouble is Only a Few Steps Behind: it doesn't behave well with construct piles it seems. It can either slide vertically along a diagonal, get blocked by a construct pile, or just outright disappears.

Attached is 3 demos that demonstrates the above behavior.

OK, I see what's up, more or less. Demo 1 is correct behavior - the unstable projection can be returned to the token in lieu of it exploding. I guess the checks made for that final step supersede the usual check for running into something and exploding.

I'm not sure it's worth fixing for this hold, but it might be worth a look if anyone else decides to use these. There have been enough useful scripting additions that much of the hold's scripting could use an overhaul anyway if things get reused.
