How can one let the eye out and then circle around behind it to kill it in the passage?

Here's a trick to get an eye to follow you horizontally with a mirror:

/M.
.E.

b-beethro, m-mirror, e-eye

With this setup, you can get an eye to follow you east horizontally until you are ready to dash to the passage.

I don't get it. I can't get the eye in that position, only the horizontally flipped version of that position, and while that allows me to run into the tunnel where the eye comes from, it doesn't allow me to kill it because I'm facing the wrong way.
