×using one of the 8 arrow keys to move Bethro in will "attack" in the direction you moved, even if it is impossible for Bethro to actually move in that direction. So for instance, if the adder's head is SW of you, you can hit the 1 key to move SW. Bethro won't move since he is blocked by the adder, but you will attack and the adder will lose a segment.
