I was looking at the ratings and criticisms of a few movies and their sequels like Shrek and Pirates of the Caribbean. Without fail, as the movie number increased, the ratings lowered and the criticisms got more and more scathing.

And yet, I loved those movies, and their sequels. I never felt like they were substantially worse than any other movie, and definitely no worse than the first in their series.

So am I just an idiot who loves familiar characters, suckled to corporate cash cow franchises? Or is my opinion not totally idiotic, and someone can agree with me or stick up for these movies?

Pirates of the Caribbean was a fun movie.
PotC 2 was an abomination.
PotC 3 is unspeakable.

Okay, perhaps not that bad but if I never saw the second two (or there's another one apparently?) then it will probably be too soon. The Ninja has a good review here:

On the other hand, I actually enjoyed Cars 2 and that had horrible reviews.

Edit: So I guess what I'm saying is, I'm with you on some sequels.

Being a critic can get in the way of enjoying a movie. But, even without those finely tuned critiquing skills, you can still feel the difference between a good movie and a "Wow!" movie.

Some of my favorite movies are sequels. The Empire Strikes Back, The Godfather Part II, etc. Even The Dark Knight is a sequel, though it's rarely recognized as one.
