Hello everyone!

Excellent job on the contest entries, but now comes the time to evaluate and vote! The entries are inside a somewhat unpolished hub world I created with the contest theme in mind. Exploring around will reveal staircases to the various entries.

Being not nearly as clever as Someone Else and very lazy, keeping track of your thoughts and ratings is probably best done with Notepad or pen and paper.

Also, if you're not one to explore a bit, or you get frustrated with a few of the rooms, feel free to hit up the editor to explore around.

Also, seeming I'm a terrible inexperienced architect, there are probably bugs. Please, please let me know immediately if you find one and I will do what I can to quickly update the hold.

May the best entry win!

Just to remind everyone, VOTE 10 ON YOUR OWN ENTRY/ENTRIES. This eliminates some unfairness.

Thank you, you may resume whatever you were doing.

In case anyone was wondering, I've confirmed all rooms in the hold are solvable, save for Museum of Unnatural History : 2N1E.

Whether all solutions are as their authors *intended* is, of course, another matter.

I've enjoyed looking around at all the entries, but I have to say -- the majority could be instantly told apart from genuine rooms on account of difficulty alone!

EDIT: Okay, here are my thoughts on the first room of each hold (the KDD ones). Naturally, I won't vote until I've looked at the other rooms as well.

I agree with Nuntar above about the KDD rooms. Most are probably the hardest ones outside of Tar Ballroom I've ever seen.

So there's a very slight update that adds a few checkpoints in the hub as requested, HOWEVER>

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY DO AND I'M REALLY SORRY:

For the entry "The Four Ages Of Budkin," its opening room has a slight change that's worth taking a look at and I apologize sincerely for omitting it.

According to Panther, even though the save might not be compatible, the restores should be.

I think this is largely open to interpretation, but loosely, how well did a set of rooms capture the feel of the games they are supposed to represent. For instance, a nasty tar room that no one wants to do may not be likable but it represented KDD pretty well at times. But if you want to mark it down because it was still too awful, by all means. There's also some flexibility here as things become creative within those constraints.

Does a room try to do something to pay homage to the associated hold without ever being a room that would show up in it? That might be worth consideration.

Does a hold try to play on the very idea of a quickly jarring set of very different rooms by use of some other means? Might be worth some brownie points too.

All in all, there's a loose structure of things that you might entertain, judgement-wise. Let me know if this is insufficient. It most likely is.

After 9 votes have been cast, 11/16 entries have a score between 7 and 8 inclusive - looks like every vote will count!

Playing all entries, I think The history of drod will be problably the winner, the level is absolutely amazing. I couldn't pass any level complete except the mine, I'm so bad :(

If you're running low on time, feel free to skip "familiar places." The architect has been disabled (again!) for creating multiple accounts to manipulate the votes. His entry is disqualified and will not win any prizes.

I didn't realize you could vote a 17 for a hold. Weird.

Well... "Poll will close in 3 weeks, 3 days" so I don't think we need to worry about who the winner is gona be just yet.

Then again the "downloaded 24 times" since v2. and the original about 20 of v1. may suggest that we'll be having about 24 votes out of wich we already have 21. (...but we had some vote manipulation issues so who knows)

At anyrate, maybe posting a link leading to this topic in the holds architecture board could help bring about more eyes on this. Ya know extra votes evening things out a bit more. (or it might be totaly pointless)

On the hold and its entries it self I won't give opinions but I will share this.:

I think there are only 11 valid votes at the moment, I guess the others were eliminated. Most of the scores are still pretty close together, so don't forget to vote! ;)

I also won't comment anything specific as I'm in the contest, but I'll say that I thought there were many very good and one extraordinary hold, well done everyone!

I'm simply not going to have time to try to solve all the rooms, but I wanted to vote, so I've looked through (and played) the rest of the rooms in the editor. Here are my comments:

All right, having cobbled together some votes, here are my comments. A few notes:

* I'm not including numbers because my numbers tended to be impressionistic, not programmatic. (Except "familiar places", which I gave a 1 based on Schik's post above, though really that opening "KDD" room was so misguided it might have gotten a 1 anyway.) My comments were mostly written in "realtime", i.e. as I played through the holds. Ex post facto comments are in blue.

* I tended to give lower votes to holds with unnecessarily difficult rooms. I also tended to give lower votes to holds where "in the style of X" meant "throwing in as many elements from X as I could fit".

* I tended to give higher votes to holds that, in my opinion, really did capture the flavor of the four releases. There were some holds that I enjoyed, and where I thought the puzzles were very good, but which I gave lower votes to because they just didn't feel like KDD/JtRH/TCB/GatEB puzzles. (Also: just because you threw in rain doesn't make it feel like a GatEB room.)

Your mileage, and criteria, may vary. Comments:

I really don't see how you are rounding your scores, for example, you rounded DHM from 9.5 to 10 (upwards) but rounded Memories... from 8.5 to 8 (downwards).

I would usually round down if the decimal is below .5. And round up if the decimal is .5 or above. So in this example, Memories... should have been rounded to 9.

This is far from the strangest aspect of the scoring scheme. Rounding to the even number is also standard. Probably a better standard, since it avoids a systematic biased increase since one rounds up half the time and down half the time.

Perhaps, but Bomber still didn't do this
Final Score: 5.6/10 (rounded to 5)
so I'm not seeing his logic.

To be honest, I don't agree with his aesthetics any more than you agree with his math, but his votes are his own (her own? well, anyway), and I frankly appreciate the fact that he explained his votes.

Now, that said, among his opinions is the following (which I'm reposting unsecreted because (a) length isn't an issue and (b) they no longer apply to the post-updated compilation)...
bomber50 wrote:
The Four Ages of Budkin

Theme: I don't why there's a scripted character in the KDD room, so I'm not sure if it just deserves a 0.

Fun: Unexplained and unobvious scripting at the same time is never good.
Now, I wholly agree that if there were a KDD room with scripting, and unpredictable scripting at that, it would deserve every low vote you could find for it. Unfortunately, in this case, it was only unpredictable--and for that matter it only even looked like scripting at all--because of Pearls's error. (And the low vote may be enough in this case to knock the entry down a ranking: from 1st to 2nd, or 5th to 6th, or 20th to 21st, or wherever it is that it ends up.)

I'd like to appeal to The Powers That Be to either (a) remove bomber50's vote from that entry or (b) let him submit a new vote for it that reflects the update. It seems deeply unfair for the entry to suffer because of an error on the part of the contest's compiler.

Sure. bomber50, or anyone else for that matter, if you judged an entry wrongly due to an error in the first version of the hold, feel free to PM me a changed vote and I'll fix it for you.

.01 difference between the top 2 entries.

Tie for 3rd place, and all 4 entries within .1 of each other. Incredible.

In the meantime, here's those comments I was talking about. These contain my guesses as to who made each hold, some rather detailed comments about each room of each hold, and my exact rating of each one.

The overall tone might be kind of negative, but be assured that there were some great holds in this contest and I can highly recommend any hold I gave a score of 7 or better on. I think at the time I was probably just concerned about justifying why I didn't give any hold but my own a perfect score. (But I gave several holds an 8 or 9.)

So, congratulations to everyone who participated in the contest. We have a wide selection of entries here, and the final compilation ought to be a neat hold full of all different kinds of interpretations of the contest guidelines.
