Just playing "Populous 3: The Beginning" (and I'm so happy it exists - didn't realise they released a 3rd one).

Anyway, was wondering if the shadow effect used primarily in JtRH was in some way inspired by this? The textual menu uses shadows in much the same way.

Intrigued as I can't remember seeing that before. And if anyone's interested, Populous 1 and 2 are currently on discount on gog.com and 3 is pretty cheap there too (can't remember the exact price but I believe $5.99)

Ah, I remember trying a demo of Populous 3, and it seemed pretty cool. I'm not sure what you mean about a shadow effect in JtRH, though. Do you mean the TCB title screen?

Yeah - the menu selection basically (JtRH is the best example).

The cursor basically becomes the light source and it's the same in Populous 3. I'm guessing there's no direct link (as you haven't really played the latter ) but it certainly reminded me of DROD

Again, I'm going to assume you really mean TCB here. I got the general idea from the DROD3D title screen when I tried out the demo a long time ago.
