It is time. Time that I tackle THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURE REQUEST IN THE HISTORY OF...

Oh, right... You already read that. :P Anyway, down to small, piercing tools made from an alloy of copper and zinc. As we are all aware, gentlemen...:

...oh, and also ladies (yes, techant and CSR, I remember you)...

...aaaaaand banjooie.

...aaaaaand (reluctantly) TRICKSTER. :look Anyway. DROD has coined a number of pseudo-latin ordinals which mean "number of times":

Once, Twice, Thrice, Quarce, Quince, Sence, Septence, Octence, Novence, Tonce

Elevonce, Twolce, Thorce, Quartonce, Quintonce, Sextonce, Septonce, Octonce, Noventonce, ...

The problem is that this stops at 20. This is a shame. No, that's not firm enough. It is a damn shame. It is the type of shame that makes Samuel Jackson very cross. (I had some ASCII art to put in here but Samuel Jackson turns out to be too large for any one forum to hold him.)

So, I propose some new words below to cover the gaps. Getting serious for a moment, :glasses I'm actually going to use these words in one of my holds, so I would like consensus on the best set to use. If we can get a community agreement of some sort on a cool set of words to handle larger numbers, then perhaps they would become the standard.

I've played around with various naming systems, but I'm currently favoring those which are structured, not historically accurate, do not exceed three syllables, and are English-familiar, just like the batch in DROD. Here's what I have, starting from 20:

20 Twaince
21 Unitwince
22 Twitwince
23 Thortwince
24 Quartwince
25 Quintwince
26 Sextwince
27 Septwince
28 Octwince
29 Noventwince

U C what I did thar, I presume. (Try not to realize that "Twitwince" sounds like what happens when Beethro gets a 'Neather mallet to the head; it's better that way.)

30 Thraince
31 Unithrince
32 Twithrince
33 Thorthrince
34 Quarthrince
35 Quinthrince
36 Sexthrince
37 Septhrince
38 Octhrince
39 Noventhrince

40 Quadraince
41 Uniquarce
42 Twiquarce
43 Thorquarce
44 Quarquarce (EDIT: changed this back)
45 Quintquarce
46 Sexquarce
47 Septquarce
48 Octquarce
49 Novenquarce

Note how the prefixes for -5, -7, and -8 get back the "t" because the suffix for 4- does not begin with one. (Also, I changed back 44 recently, for increased regularity.)

Since the rest mostly depend only on the root and its abbreviated suffix, here's a short version of 50-99:

50 Quintaince -quince
60 Sextaince -sence
70 Septaince -spence
80 Octaince -ctet or -octet
90 Nontaince -nonce

Most of these don't matter since my hold will stop...slightly earlier than this. But just for fun:

100 Centonce
101 Un-centonce (dash should be left in!)
563 Sexthrin-cenquince
0 Nonce
-1 Negonce
-2 Negatwice

Whee. Anyway, I crave your thoughts on this like a starving mind flayer, because I'd prefer to have a somewhat-agreed-upon standard before I enholdify it. Your serve. :fun

Wow. That's a bit of work there.
Presumably Tahnan will have something to say about this. Right? As for me, I'd probably never make it twenty rooms in any direction in any of your holds so my thoughts don't matter much :)

Much like English stops doing the "teen" thing and starts doing things like "twenty-one" and "thirty-four", so Simpuhl English must eventually settle on a more consistent system for higher numbers. I'm OK with the status quo.

I agree with Trickster here. For instance, I find "Thraince" particularly fun to say.

I'm going to accept this thread because it has a combination of a specific callout to me, AND a Problem Sleuth reference.

But sure, okay, I'm all for this being thrown into the game.

To be honest, I'd prefer numbers rather than words for all rooms, just to eliminate any confusion. Or at least a way to toggle between numbers or Eighth-ized words.

I hereby object to "Quadquarce" on the basis that "Quarquarce" is more fun to say and to "Octquarce" because it's so awkward; "Octiquarce" sounds much better.

I like the idea of the "reverse French" style...

Twaince
Twaonce
Twatwice
Twathrice
Twaquarce
Twaquince
Twasence
Twaseptence
Twaoctence
Twanovence

Thrainse
Thraonce
Thratwise

...

Just a thought :)

Rat Man, get out of this thread and go read Problem Sleuth.

I won't even expect Homestuck out of you. Just Problem Sleuth. I am a generous person.

Trickster, the DROD forum seems to have this slow yet inevitable trickle of underage kids at any given time. We only ever seem to have, like, two? At a time? But we always have, like, 1-2. It is never less, and it is never more.

Man I get to about the part where the mural is mentioned for the first time and I get bored to tears from randomness. Problem Sleuth is not getting off easy.

It's not that, it's just, like,

Problem Sleuth can herp. Also, it can derp. But it can't herp while it's derping.

For some people that's enough, but I'm not a Halph-wit.

So to conclude...

The most important feature request in the history of DROD is an 1800 page book about a detective, which happens to be hard to read

Even aumtlich sound like a good idea compared to that

But there hasn't really been much to say about Samuel L. Jackson recently. I'm sure the Marvel stuff pays the bills, but otherwise it's like he dropped off the face of the earth after Snakes on a Plane. Maybe I'm just watching the wrong movies?

Back on topic, I think Trickster's idea or the problem he is posing is worth a discussion.

I started Beethro's Teacher recently and on the first level, you go north, north and north. In fact you go 20 times north, and seeing that "20" written in that last room name made me hurt.

For me, it is a problem about consistency and style. I think all the rooms should be written in the same way. Be it one or the other.
I find the current names for the rooms in DROD funny enough, so I'd prefer to name the 20+s in the same way and I like Trickster's suggestion.

Whereas I don't look forward to repeating this thread when someone decides to hit the new naming limit. Heck, I kind of thought that level was 20 rooms partly for that reason - "oh my, it's so long it reached the limit of the naming system!" - or at least to show everyone all the names.

This is a fun idea, Trickster. I don't think it's mentioned in this thread, but here's some trivia just in case anyone is interested:

the DROD room editor technically does not support levels with greater than 100x100 rooms. The level entrance is, by default, placed at the center of this grid. So, even on the largest levels, you will almost never see an offset of greater than fifty.
