Terraria - It's kinda like Minecraft but it's more...Super Metroid, I guess? It's frigging ten dollars, buy it.
Having never played Minecraft nor Super Metroid I can't vouch for the accuracy of the above statement, but since it's 50% off (i.e. 5 USD) on Steam for the next 43 hours or so I'd really recommend checking out Terraria - I know I had a lot of fun in the last few weeks with it, and thanks to a huge patch that landed today it can only get better...

In case you're looking for a video - TotalBiscuit did a first impression on the game in May and did 12 or so more videos since then so I guess he was quite intrigued, which doesn't happen too often... :)

np: Tied + Tickled Trio + Billy Hart - Violent Collaborations Pt. 1 (La Place Demon)

Terraria's quite fun, especially if you have someone to do multiplayer with. Steam says I have 150 hours logged on it, certainly a good 6x what I expected to get out of it. I wouldn't compare it to Minecraft, as Terraria is more varied and less grindy, as well as having a more interesting combat system and no monsters that wreck your stuff like a certain hissing annoyance. Minecraft is better for tileart though, if you're one of those weird people who prefer their sprite editors to be unnecessarily cumbersome or double as games.

Edit: I will say that today may not be the best time to start playing, as the patch seems to have... broken... things...
Edit2: There's going to be a hotfix out this week, supposedly.

I picked up Terraria the last time it was on sale (the same day Portal 2 was on sale for 50% off, and of course now the regular price is almost the same as that sale price) and I had a ton of fun with it for a few weeks. Right now I have run out of things that I want to do in the game, but I'm not that interested in the crafting and home-building stuff (except for everything that made my character more powerful for exploring and killing bosses). The most recent patch (1.0.6) was mostly a balancing patch, without much new content (besides some vanity items to craft), so I'm much more looking forward to the 1.1 patch which I hope will add more reasons to go exploring once you've maxed your character out. If not, then some day I'll probably make a new random world and start a new character from scratch just for the fun of it.

Oh my god it's Neil

in other news, I was watching some multiplayer servers where they reset every two weeks, and you're supposed to start new characters--and then they basically try to colonize the world within those two weeks, you keep what you sow, and then it starts all over again.

Kinda like speedrunning.

I had summed up my Terraria experience with this graph:

This was before the last two or three patches though, and I know they tried to work on difficulty curve. Still, my main character pretty much has all the best gear in the game, and I haven't really felt the need to replay the game at all.

Good news, man. You now have a reason to play again. Terraria 1.1 patch is out, with a ton of new content and a greatly extended endgame. Of note are new NPCs, new biomes, a new boss, Corruption that is actually a threat now, and of course a rudimentary mechanics system.

And for those of you who don't have it, go get it. It's $2.50 USD today only. http://store.steampowered.com/app/105600/
