First, in secret tags, which room I'm discussing:

I wonder if I've forgotten something about the behavior of one of these elements, after years away from the game.

I think I've already figured out the main part of the puzzle here, which is

I must be missing something regarding what the builder is capable of doing here? Or something about water-skippers?

In any case, apart from that last mechanism, I thought this was a fun, well-designed room. First you need to figure out what you need to do. Then you need to figure out how to do it as efficiently as possible. And then the last bit we've been discussing.

Here's how bridge-dropping works. I think it's been known behavior for a while, and I've used this behavior before in one of my earlier published holds. However, it doesn't come up that often so I don't blame anyone playing this hold for not knowing it.

That's not a guard, that's a Stalwart. Stalwarts try to help you out by killing your enemies. They target the closest accessible enemy. In this room, the waterskipper is not accessible to the stalwart, so he'll try to help you out by killing accessible brains. Stalwarts are smart enough to avoid killing your friends. Decoys are considered to be your friends, so he will not move if that causes his sword to kill a decoy.

In this room, there's one particular brain you want the Stalwart to kill. Therein lies the puzzle. That's all I'll say unless you have further questions. :)

Can you post a screenshot so I can help you better? The situation you seem to be describing should not come up in the actual solution to this room.

It may be that your Stalwart is not moving because his path will take his sword through a decoy.

Actually, that is the exact issue. :)

Your Stalwart's sword is pointing SE. I've circled the two decoys in your screenshot that are preventing him from moving.

OK, I have seen him turn at other areas to kill a brain, I guess I don't understand why not here?

The simple answer is, he's not close enough to the brain to turn here.

There's a lot to know about Stalwart movement rules and turning, if you're interested. This hold, Advanced Concepts 2, has a level that explains Stalwart behavior.

Huh... I'm one decoy off. My best chance is to swipe a decoy from the group of three via somehow optimizing it if I REALLY gotta do that. What's my error?
