sword-trapdoors and life gates (+1)
Lately I've been thinking about two puzzle elements, sword-trapdoors and life gates, as I've called them.
Sword-trapdoors, or perhaps metal detectors would be trapdoors that don't mind supporting Beethro's weight, but will fall down if his Really Big Sword passes over them. This would make for interesting puzzles where you have to figure out how to fight roaches ahead of you, while you can't walk with your sword out in front. Or perhaps, trying to manipulate goblins, but losing a bit of footing on each move.
The other idea was the life gate, a door that toggles if any monster in the room is killed. I imagine them becoming frustrating in orb puzzles, where the player must run from place to place without killing all of the (usually simple) monsters in his way, or conversely, you might not be able to get to a time-sensitive target until you've figured out an ingenious way to kill some other monster in time.
