I don't know, maybe the sig is invisible.

You'll probably need to sneak up on it like you have to do with spiders to find out what it says, although by that time, a spider will probably have crept up behind you, leaving you with no hope of escape.

A side note: It's not as obvious as it could have been, had this been posted on another board, but your first two posts do go against what was mentioned here. I'd suggest reading it if you are interested in contributing more to the DROD community.

Incidently, I was in a faculty meeting where-in that quote was presented as part of a presentation. All the math/science teachers were giggling hysterically and all of the english/social science teachers were looking bewildered.

I've actually heard a more condensed version of LoTR before.
From memory, and translated from Swedish:


1. Frodo gets a mission
Gandalf: Destroy.

2. The work is divided
Elrond: Okay, all you small people do the hard work, and we'll do the easy.

3. A lot of people travel back and forth

4. The ring is destroyed. Frodo returns home.

The Groucho Marx Paradox: Consider the set of all sets which wouldn't want to be members of any set which would have them as members.

So why is this an paradox? A set does not want to be member of any set? Tough luck, you're already in there.

Let's rephrase it: You're already a member of this forum. We want you to be a member of this club. You don't want to be here? That doesn't seem to be a paradox to me...

Lets call the Set in question G (for groucho). Does G want to be a member of itself? If yes, then it would let itself be a member, but then by definition, it wouldn't want to be a member of itself. If no, then it would be a member by definition, but that means that G wants itself to be a member of itself.

The next sentence is true. The last sentence is false

If you interpret "the last" to be absolute rather than relative (ie "the previous") there's a different contradiction than you probably intended.

Exactly. I had the "previous" version changed into my "last" version because this sounds much more interesting. (My "previous" version had "previous" in it instead.)

Well, alright, but that was basically the resolution to Russell's Paradox (The set of all sets which aren't members of themselves). I guess the paradox comes from the fact that you can name a set in a perfectly reasonable sounding way, but that set can't exist.

In general, paradoxes are only paradoxes given certain logical assumptions. Russel's paradox (and the Groucho Marx variant) are paradoxes if you have a set theory that states that anything of the form {x: P(x)} is a set.

Similarly, the liar's paradox is only a paradox if you have a bivalent logic. If you allow that there exist sentences that are neither true nor false, then the liar's paradox disappears. That doesn't mean it's not a paradox. (Similarly, in a trivalent logic Tim's sig is straightforward: one of the two sentences is false and the other is neither true nor false, we don't have enough information to tell which (at least for the "previous" interpretation of "last")).

After covering the earth in darkness, blasting everything that was against him into oblivion and generally killing most other living things, what would he do afterwards?

Well, I had to google for the quote in your sig to see where it came from. The first 6 results were posts that you've made either on this forum or on others. The last one was a page of quotes, which might actually be yours, but at least it explained the origin of the quote.

I've caught that cartoon (Duck Dodgers) a couple of times, but I think the original 5 minute shorts were better than the 30 minute shows.
