I always thought part of l33t-speak was an immature attitude and tendency towards insults. I won't speak for Skwerl, but maybe he was leaning towards parody.

As far as I've seen (and thus can guess), (when not turned into a parody) it is often used as a form of insult mainly for the fact that it is a form of writing that cannot be understood by all people, and that it is flexible in terms of how you can actually use it, rather than for any particularly offensive properties it has. This is probably to hide spelling or grammar inadequacies in English and thus give a sense of superiority to users over those who cannot use it, or who cannot understand its particular manifestation.

Insulting another person is something that has unfortunately appeared become an integral part of society, due to the fact that all humans are naturally competitive and so all aspire to be the best at something or force others to become less good at it than the person. On a level playing field like the Internet where physically we are all mostly the same, this is one manifestation of such a struggle for the best "reputation" that has developed.[/psycho-analysis]

Now, I may be very wrong about this, and probably have missed out some details that I could have used, so I apologise tentatively in advance for that.

In reference to this thread, I'm not saying that its starter, SKWERLL, is particularly inclined to insult or be immature, and also take the view that this is basically a joke or parody of the whole thing.

1: I am now significantly more of teh suk right now since I am teh starter of this topic and this is my second post in a row without 1337 5P33K

2: The topic itself was NOT meant to be just a thing to flame or hide insults, and

3: I found the 1337 cereal box in the abandoned "Funny Pictures Thread" by DiMono.

The main reason I called Gamer_Extreme_101 and Masonjason "Unleet asses" was because I said specifically to try and post in 1337 or they would be declared "teh suk". And now that i think about it, it should have been "unleet ass" since gamer_extreme DID post in 1337 at least a little.

Can we change the subject now?

Interesting resource: this is a human-leet translator. Type normal text in the top, and it gets changed to 1337 in the bottom. Similarly, a human-aoler translator can be found here.

I think the aoler one is more funny. Here's a sample of it:

I don't see any dogmatic reason why forum members should be discouraged from starting up a 1337 thread on the Anything board. All other various and sundry ilk have found their way here, so why not this? Just because lots of people won't understand it? So...what...if I can't figure out any of the puzzles in Puzzle tag, or I can't make sense of the one-word literature, now I have to start posting on those threads voicing how stupid and pointless it all is and telling everyone to go home? "No!" I hear you shout. "If you don't like it, then go lurk or post somewhere else." I think the same applies here. Why either gang up on or shoot down a fellow forum member who goes off to do his own thing? SKWERLL's not even butting in on another thread, and it's the Anything board, for crying out loud. No one analyzes why someone starts up a "tag" thread, trying to guess their ulterior motive. Why can't we just post things because they're "cool" and "fun" for some people (are "cool" and "fun" now outdated, no longer a good enough reason to do anything?) Why can't we all just get along?! Oh, the humanity!!!

My apologies for not posting this in 1337. And I've never met an ilk, whatever it is, but I hope never to run into one in a dark alley.

I'm under the assumption that you are directing this at me, since you used the word "analyse", in reference to a post several posts up.

Now, I really don't want to prolong this digression (for digression it is, under the thread's rules, I think), or start a real argument with you, but I must say that I think this is quite unreasonable.

The thing is that there is no such thing as a perfect society, and that therefore, humanity itself is flawed; it's what makes us who we are. So, with reference to this forum, there will never be such a thing as a "perfect" thread, where everyone "gets along" with each other, as you put it.

Understandably, this thread was not intentionally created for the purpose of anything but randomness (as far as I can decipher), but since the analysis topic was brought up, I took it further and digressed, since I have an opinion on the subject too. However, rather than analyse this topic (which no-one has done, I think), I went for analysis of the actual usage of it in conversational context, and put the analysis here, since it was convenient.

I have no intention of stopping this thread, nor do I particularly want to stifle new ideas on any board. All I wanted to do was digress by continuing a discussion, rather than starting a new thread up for that purpose. Is it criminal to try to understand something?

You know, I think leetspeek originates from the times when phone costs were high and modems were slow... Sceners needed to give each other messages in as few bytes as possible on the various bbs'es ("see you later" is 13 bytes, while "cu l8r" is only 6 -- over 50% compression!). As time went by, speeds went up and costs went down, the reasons were forgotten, it became common knowledge and was warped beyond recognition, and suddenly 1337 was k3wl.
