Rightio, poll time. Remember to vote on how well it feels like a maze, as opposed to a normal RPG level. Ideally they should all feel like a maze, thus people will then vote on how enjoyable it is, without becoming frustrating or confusing.

Remember, contestants, to vote 10 for yourselves, and a decent score for the others.

If your stumped by a puzzle, announce it and discuss it before voting it down.

If you want to discuss other details of the level sets', use [unhidetime=8/9/2009 9:00 PM]Your hidden text.[/unhidetime] this.

A few questions:

(a) Why are there two extra, unlabeled voting boxes?

(b) Is "Trapped..." solveable? That is, can you get past the northern green door in 2N?

Because I accidentally made more options than there were entries. Vote for them as you will.

All right, my vote is in. Vote, people, vote!

My needlessly opinionated opinions:

An overall thought: people have argued that you should use the full 1-10 range. I noted at the time that there just weren't any holds in that contest that I considered a "1" quality: the lowest vote I gave there was a 5. Here, I felt the opposite way: the highest vote I gave here was 7. There just wasn't anything I looked at where I thought, "This is the pinnacle of mazemaking." Alas.

Done. Aaaand done.

Some really interesting and constructive and smart notes:
Arrows Everywhere - Not much of a challenge
Crazy Maze - Awesome! All my tens are belong to this!
Maze Generator - Neat
Maze of Suariga - didn't like, not enough maze'ish
Mazes of Thought - Pretty easy but nifty nevertheless
The Lost Woods (of Doom) - Mastered :). That was pretty easy with Quicksaving and then when I saw the message at the end of the hold I realized the trick (and found the secret afterwards). Nevertheless, I hate this kind of mazes, whether hinted or not.
Trapped something - uncompletable? o_O
13 thing - Whoever made this, I hate you! (But seems nice as a maze)

My thoughts:

A lot of very good entries, which means that I've had to mark quite harshly. I've marked on a combination of how much it feels like a maze, and how much I enjoyed it - though the former influences the latter quite a bit. Ingenuity generally got rewarded though not always.

Arrows everywhere: The first time I used click-to-move which made it rather easy but played it again properly and it was quite good, if a bit annoying. 5/10.

Crazy Maze: The best use of game elements other than walls and scripting. A bit linear - there was rarely more than one or two things you could do when you found each new object/set of keys, but still good. 9/10

Maze Generator: Very clever, and it designs pretty good mazes too, but for some inexplicable reason I don't want to give it a very high mark. Sorry! 6/10

Maze of Suariga: This felt far too much like a DROD RPG hold, with the monsters to kill etc. And I'm not a fan of DROD RPG holds. 2/10

Mazes of Thought: I enjoyed these. Not very hard, and more puzzle than maze, but still fun. 7/10

The Lost Woods (Of Doom): I actually felt lost. Which is, IMO, the point of a maze. Mapping it was a bit annoying but still, 10/10.

The Revenge of Level 13: I liked the way this was put together - particularly the way there was usually lots of different directions to explore from each room - while the use of keys etc - while there was less of it than Crazy Maze, not that that's necessarily a bad thing - was good. But when I found the yellow key (and admittedly I had found the yellow door first) it felt a bit anticlimatic - there was so much of the maze unused. And out of interest, what was the point of the attack/defence gems? 8/10

Trapped in the maze of death: Seems to be unsolvable. 2/10

Tahnan, chill. I'm not angry and you shouldn't be either, unless you just want to be a jerk. I just don't see the need for untiltime. If people don't want to be influenced, all that's needed is secret tags.

Jatopian, chill. "How dare we..." is no angrier in tone than "curse you people...".

But seriously, untiltime tags for contest comments are a long-standing tradition (see, e.g., this post from the December 2004 contest. Regardless of which, NiroZ did rather specifically request that we use them. If you've got reasons you don't like it when people wait until the polls are closed to comment on the entries, you could certainly discuss them, but "curse you people and your untiltime tags" is hardly a productive contribution.

I think we should all follow Bobpie's advice, this is getting a little out of hand.

As for the use of until time tags, I think the little inconvience of copy pasting the tags is worth the extra security. Given the shenanigans with the poll voting in the past, I'm not inclined to be completely trusting of the forumites. It's not that big a deal.

Is "Crazy Maze" possible? I can't work out how to solve the mirror puzzle.

Also, I just realised I made a mistake on one of my votes :weep Can I take it back?

The mirror puzzle that I think you're talking about (the one in the maze core) is possible. Solution follows:

So, here are my closing thoughts on the entries.

Arrows Everywhere: this one certainly lived up to its name! I liked the use of red herring keys that you had to spot and avoid.

Crazy Maze: yup, that's the sort of maze I would have tried to build if there'd been more time for this contest :angry The second half was a severe let-down, though, after how good the first was; another thing that could be better was if the power gems were hidden in the maze rather than all in places you had to go for other reasons anyway.

Maze Generator: nice idea, very impressive scripting and fun to play around with -- not sure how long the novelty value would last though.

Mazes of Thought: some excellent implementations. I particularly liked the fact that after solving the no-left-turns maze, you have to turn left to exit the room, so you get to see that the scripting really works! The Doppelganger maze was far too hard to be enjoyable though. And the arrow reversal maze was far too easy, making me think I found an unintended solution.

Lost woods of doom: too much trial and error, not enough like a real maze. The fact that you always had to go back to the beginning made it too frustrating.

Revenge of Level 13: excellent maze, and I particularly liked the way gems were used to score you for how much you managed to explore.

Trapped in a maze of death: maze-like layouts in individual rooms do not add up to a maze. Seems to be impossible to progress beyond the third room.

Non-existent entries: I voted 4 and 6 because I had not given those scores to any of the real entries.

Maze of Suariga: my entry. I think I made a good start, but the maze is far too small because there was so little time :angry I really don't expect this to get a good score as it is (but I hope at least some of you find and appreciate the little easter eggs in the Surface rooms). To be honest, I am angry that we were given so little time, for an architecture contest of all things; surely the point of contests running for a month is that some people will be too busy if you get them at a bad time, and having a longer period evens those things out and gives everyone a fair chance. This would have been a contest I would have really looked forward to if it had come up at any other time, as well, and those come up once in a blue moon. :angry

You don't need zero, but Q and W are turn anticlockwise and turn clockwise respectively, so press whatever keys you have set for those.

Yeah, just move as though you were on a numpad... zero really isn't necessary to get a good maze out of it. Then turn counterclockwise to submit and carry on as usual.
