I tried to start DROD today but after a few seconds of watching the eggtimer, DROD never appeared. However, it showed in task manager (XP Pro) and was using 98% cpu. After trying to start it a couple of times, I checked the drod1_6.dat files, the current one being nearly 78 meg, and the backup 4.3 meg. Renaming the backup got me running again but a few hours play from last night were lost. :(

This is exactly what happened to me in some other bug report I made. Did you start it up while your anti-virus program was starting up, or some other program that demands access to applications? Mine only made it to 12Mb though, since my computer's only a 1.66

No, I, or rather my computer, was doing nothing out of the ordinary, just leeching from usenet as usual :) At first I thought I had simply misclicked and so I tried again. Task manager showed 2 DROD's using around 50% cpu each, so I closed them down and tried again before checking the dat files.

Can you remember any special circumstances ? If this happens again to anyone, please make a copy of both the .dat files and the backups before you do anything else, and let us know.

Running two DRODs at once would probably corrupt data, but there's stuff to prevent that kind of thing (DROD exits if it detects another instance running)... Did you have two DRODs running as well, DiMono ?

This happens to me sometimes, and I just restart the computer and it's fine again.

Oh... a small thing I noticed - If I start DROD when the computer starts up and is processing things heavily, I can actually open up mutiple instances of DROD that all work. However, I do close them all before doing anything to avoid corruption.

There were none at all, other than the cat had thrown up on the carpet. ;) I started a download from usenet as usual, made coffee, then tried to start DROD. Nothing I hadn't done a thousand times before.

Good idea, and that's what I did, but who is going to start uploading a 78 meg file for you to check? ;)

Try zipping or raring it.

Too late I'm afraid, I deleted it this morning before I saw your reply. I tried to get it back using Ontrack but it had already been overwritten. It's probably no help, but I looked at it with a hex editor yesterday and there was only about 2k of data at the beginning of the file, the rest was empty.

Hello all,

I had exactly the same problem last night - but for what reason I'm not certain. At one point I noticed strange horizontal flickering in the DROD game window (I think I was playing the Oversight hold at the time, if that matters), that got particularly strong during screen to screen scrolls. A scroll later, my computer froze - which is very uncommon, since I run a properly configured win2000 on my box. No other applications were active at the time of the freeze, bar the usual windows background services. After restart, scandisk reported invalid file size for my DROD player file and truncated it - and it was kind of expected to see it non-functional after that. I renamed the backup copies to normal ones and it all worked all right (with a few rooms setback, though). However, the log file contains some messages devs might find interesting for debugging purposes (esp. the DirectDraw error). If you're interested, would you like me to post them as an attachment here, or via e-mail?

Also, if it would matter in tracing the origin of the error, I have DX9 installed, and the latest Nvidia video drivers, all functional, no errors.

Oh - and one more thing. Backup .dat files were exactly the same size as the non-functional ones.

Cheers

Yes, please. You can just post/attach the log here.

Certainly. Here's the entire drod.err file, and to the best of my knowledge, only the lines below and including the DirectDraw error are relevant to this situation. And anyway, better not to cut it, you might miss something that could be important. I hope this helps.

Oh, and it wasn't The Oversight, it was King Reubus' Palace hold I was playing at the time of the freeze, Dungeon level 3 if memory serves.

Cheers

I just had another, similar, problem. I'd had DROD running most of the day, playing The Keep during slack periods. About 30 minutes ago, I decided to close it down, by pressing escape twice, because I was going to be busy with something else. I changed my mind, started DROD again, only to find I was starting a level or two earlier. I closed DROD again and checked the dat files, and the time on them was nearly 4 hours previous. It occurred to me to check Task Manager and there was a copy of DROD in processes. I closed that down and checked the dat's and this time they had been updated to the present time. There doesn't appear to be any corruption. What is left plays ok, but I lost a number of rooms along the way for some reason.
