I'm certainly confused by the room arrangement with this hold in general.

From the layout of the room, with the mimic potions at the upper end of the room, I would expect that I should be entering from the top, not the bottom.

Can any kid soul point me in the right direction?

This is just one of many rooms in DROD where you first run through without solving, and then re-enter to solve from a more favorable entrance.

To run through a horde of goblins without getting clobbered, simply point your sword in the direction you're running, and go! In this case, point your sword north and run north through the goblins. The goblins will move out of your way, as they avoid the swordpoint.
