Syntax is to do with the rules about how you can fit words together to make sentences, i.e. why "The dog is barking." is a valid sentence and "The dog barking is." isn't. The term gets used in things like computer programming languages as well, to refer to all the rules about where you put braces and semicolons and stuff.

That simpler than Wikipedia?
