Regarding gel growth patterns... it grows exactly like mud or tar, though only those bits connected to the mother will grow.
Remember that you can only cut gel on inside corners, and so after you've stepped off a trapdoor, you may not be able to cut the gel there again.
Also, the gel babies can usually be cleared up later on, the gel is the tricky one.
The except to the inside corners rule is the mother, if she's the lastbit of gel, then it's easier. My own person solution involves gradually taking out more and more trapdoors, and then making one big push to destroy all the gel.
