I just tried to upload my new avatar, wherein my last name actually means something, and... well, what you see there on the left is the result. It's a standard-format GIF image with ultra-simple black text on a transparent background; in fact, it's exactly the same format as my last one. The name is "sokko.gif" and this is what the forum gives me as the address of my avatar after uploading:

Note the double-slash and double-extension (PNG? Where'd that come from?).

If the script has to resize an avatar, it always saves it as a PNG file. Try resizing it yourself to at most 100x75, re-upload it, and see if it works. In the meanwhile I'll update the code to save it in the same format as the source file, but as I'm in the middle of other large changes this one won't be on the main site for a couple of days.

Okay, it works now, albeit with a few jaggies. I think I'll have to type it in a smaller font and do it again so it doesn't look horrible. Thanks for the assist!

I just want to know why the middle character of your old last name was reversed.

Anyway, I know no Japanese whatsoever, and looking up those characters could take a looong time. But it looks neat.

But you did. Here is a Hiragana chart. The middle character in your old last name was "ti" (I think), but it was reversed. I'm sure, because I actually looked up the characters and had trouble finding that one.

I don't know what you're thinking, because there was no "ti" whatsoever in my old last name. I note that that chart leaves out most of the extended consonants such as Z, which was used in my old name. I suggest you go here for major chartage. And as for a reminder, here's the old one:

[Translation: You'd better have Unicode. ]


P.S. So, have you figured out what the new last name means? I'd like to find out whether it would actually be "acceptable" and something like a name you might ordinarily see (if a bit unusual).

Well, I can't see those characters, unfortunately. Perhaps you could put up your old avatar as an attachment? Because I'm quite sure there was something wrong with one of the characters.

I need to point out something - 'sa' (the middle character in Sokko's old last name) when writen in hiragana on computer, looks rather different to how it's written by hand. By hand it looks like a cross with a dash underneath it, while on the computer, it looks like a backwards 'chi'.

The character is "sa"?

Looking at it again, I can see the likeness with the "sa" in the chart. But it still looks more like a backwards "ti" (or "chi" ). That's what confused me.

P.S. No, Sokko, I haven't figured out your new last name yet. I'll take a look at it, though.

Aye, it does look like a backwards 'chi', but only in print. By hand the crossbeams are a lot stronger.

The original problem was solved, but there was still room for further discussion on relatively the same topic. Rather than start a new one and clutter up the boards, we figure why not keep it here? I'd change the title, but that would confuse anyone looking for it.
