I have AIM, and a convenient feature is that it shows you when someone you are talking with is typing. I propose something similar, which informs you whenever a chatting player is typing. It could probably show up as some small text (like the one for locking room edges), appear as a list of users followed by "are typing" to use as little text as possible, and not show up at all when no one is typing.

This would be nice, but there should be an option for others not to be able to see if you're typing, if you don't want them to.

As far as I can tell (with no thorough research, just a bit of observation), the CaravelNet chat is a periodic pull by the client from the server every 10 seconds, rather than a persistent connection over which data is pushed. While that's the case, this would be impossible to implement with anything resembling accuracy.
