See, this is where linux kicks Windows right out the door. If a program crashes under linux, the rest of the system keeps running. It's only one program that's having issues, so it's only that one program that crashes. Plus you can do hot-swaps of most of your hardware without fear of... well... anything at all. Oh yeah, and it's free.

Go Go Linux!

The same holds of Windows XP, though, at least on my computers.

Well, I just helped someone here installing the driver for a wireless network card in Windows XP:

Me: (Double-clicking Setup.exe.)
XP: Are you sure you want to do this ?
Me: Yes.
XP: I want to search the internet for another driver than the one you just selected.
Me: You don't have access to the internet. This driver isn't installed yet.
XP: You have a point ?
Me: Install this one I just selected.
XP: Are you sure ? That really isn't recommended.
Me: Yes, I'm sure.
XP: Okay, since it's you. (Installing some.)
Me: Hey, that was easy!
XP: Hey, are you really sure you want to do this ?
Me: Yes.
XP: Okay, then. Reboot, please.
(rebooting)
Me: It doesn't work!
XP: You have to configure it. That isn't recommended, though.
Me: I'll do it anyway.
XP: Are you sure ?
Me: Yes. (Setting up driver.)
XP: Are you sure you want to do this ?
Me: Just do it.
XP: Hm, I had to change some setting, so you gotta reboot.
(rebooting)
Me: Hey, it works! Yay!
XP: Are you sure ?

'nuff said.

Hey, no-one was saying XP is perfect. Or better than Linux. Or anything like that. It's just that crashes, unlike earlier versions of Windows, are rare, and usually handled well when they happen.

Hey, no-one was saying Linux is perfect, either.

I'll leave it at that. :P

Ironically enough, the only times I can remember my Win98SE totally crashing is on shutdown, and I've had it for about 5 years. Well, it complained when I upgraded my LiveWare drivers, but that was an external conflict: the drivers required access to the sound card.

The thing about Linux is it's built by programmers. This makes it great for people who know what they're doing, but godawful for people who don't. I think this is why Linux doesn't have much penetration on the desktop, and I would really like to sit down and have a think about what I could contribute that would sort of bridge that gap between people who expect the computer to keep them informed and to confirm everything they do and Linux.

Mainly because it would shut Slashdot up.

Matt

Actually, there are all sorts of point and click interfaces for linux out there. Personally, I like KDE, but Konquerer has some serious access issues for the internet. There's even a skin for it that makes it look and behave just like a Windows that doesn't crash, including aliasing the commands to their Windows equivalents. It's pretty neat stuff.

Yeah, but they're built by programmers as well. Lost of customisation features but still not as idiotproof as Windows.

Don't get me wrong, I rather like Linux. I've warmed to it. But I rather like Windows as well.

masonjason, I downloaded your graphics and I continued to play around with more enemies. Can I use your roach/roach queen/roach egg/roach mimic graphics in my upcoming hold?
Sorry for not replying, it's been a little while. The answer is that you should be asking Levelthirteen, because he made the graphics for the queens, eggs and mimics.
