How will 1.7's Hold involve the unopenable door?
As the entrance to the hold

I think that currently the biggest chance is that it'll be the entrance. Sort of like, Dugan calls in Beethro, says "Look here, we've got all kinds of new monsters DESPITE you just cleaning up the dungeon, get back in there chop chop"

It would seem that either the door has been opened OR the architect in the story opens it... and new monsters are flooding out. What's Beethro to do? Follow where the door leads, obviously!

What, the actual dungeon?

That's for the hold designers to work out. If I was on the design team, I'd be pushing for sections of King Dugan's to act as tutorial/warmup sections, unless we were making a dungeon that was supposed to follow on from Dugan's.

As for how the story handles it... let each speak not that which he knows.

Darn lousy architect's oath... there's a little oxymoron there. Either the architects build each dungeon by hand(they CAN'T speak of the dungeon, hence the workers can't know how the architect wants it, hence they can't BUILD IT), or they can write about it. And that would mean that the whole oath is pretty much the equivilent of a mosquito bite to the exchange of information.

I'm going to say no more, because I don't want to be found face-down in a nearby river to serve as a warning to those who think thoughts about this stuff. That would be unpleasant.

But *we're* all architects. So sharing secrets with each other should be okay, shouldn't it?

Technically by releasing a hold to playtest, you are sharing secrets with others. There's nothing wrong with sharing - just don't be parasitic. ;)

I'd surmise that you're wrong - the oath shouldn't exclude architects from communicating neccesary information to builders, although knowing how architects and builders get along first hand I can tell you it can't be pretty.

Back on topic, I like the elegant way the ending of DROD explains the level 10 exit, and I actually don't want 1.7 to do anything new with it. Maybe have the entrance to 1.7 as that room without the door or something, but beyond that? I like it as is.

Nobody's mentioned yet that you do actually get on the other side of that door in the Dugan's Dungeon Revisited hold. I'm not sure that's part of the official storyline, though.
