I just replayed the level, found it a lot harder than I remembered it, especially when following the advice other folks gave it this forum... Here's advice I would give you.
First, general strategy.

×first, Beethro can fight any number of roaches so long as they only come from one direction. Key to this board is being able to get to a safe place where they are limited to coming from you in one direction, you only have so long to move before they swamp you, so figure out how much progress you can make then advance. second, since they only overwhelm you when they come from multiple directions, eliminate the ones in outlying directions first. third, the roaches cannot get to you if you trap them behind walls, and if you keep them trapped up with their roach mother, the mother cannot spawn either, since the mothers produce too many roaches to easily fight off, the best way is to keep as many as possible trapped behind walls while you eliminate the roach mothers, if necessary stop your forward progress earlier than what at first appears necessary so that you do not release a new horde of problems while you deal with the current ones. fourth, Roach mothers cannot spawn on squares that you are on, so if you have to sit right next to a roach mother while you fend off hordes, it is quite often safe. fifth, efficiency is important, so figure out where you can enter the room from with the shortest distance to your kills and what direction you need your sword facing so that you can make as much progress as possible before you have to deal with opposition. sixth, I am convinced the checkpoint on this level is a deathtrap, as roaches can come from every room except the lower right to you when you step on it, and you can't handle combat from that many directions, so step on this with caution, and only after you've got one side safely cleared.
Ok, so if that's not enough assistance, and I recommend you try playing through the stage thinking of that advice before reading further, I'll give you my specific methods, which may or may not be easiest or most efficient, but certainly work. But working things out on your own is good training and believe me, you need serious training because it gets much worse in the deeper levels (although this is one of the more challenging rooms in the shallower parts)

× You actually have time to get to many of the different roach mothers before the roaches start to swamp you... since the ones from the top and right side always seemed to be killing me when I started from the lower left and worked my way around clockwise, I decided to start by heading straight to the middle-top, which has the nice effect of leaving many roaches trapped in the middle left... once you kill the top center chamber, if you head right, killing the 4 roaches that come from the bottom first, and kill the roaches that come from there (I stopped where the passage narrows to one square right before the two rooms... keeping the roaches there coming from the east, as opposed to east and north), you should have the 2 roach queens in the right-bottom chamber stuck in the top of that chamber, with only 2 squares to spawn, which is helpful. If you move right up next to those roach queens (watch out for the 2 roaches that will come from the top room when you pass) and then you should be able to deal with the next spawning easily as you only have to deal with roaches from the left side, then you can kill the two mothers in the right bottom, along with any roaches trapped south of them (if you are efficient enough, you can kill the two roach queens and two roaches before the spawning occurs, make sure you have time though before you kill the second queen, otherwise you'll have roaches coming from 2 directions). wait til you have some time and safety, and then take out the ones in the right top. Now you have a task ahead of you, as I'm sure the top left chamber is full of roaches by now. Yet if you stick to the top part of the screen as you traverse west, you wont free any of them from their chambers, and the ones that come from the bottom-left should be handle-able. Get all the way to the left wall as soon as possible, then the roaches from the very bottom will no longer leave the room. What I chose to do next was actually to kill the middle left, although the two rooms in the top left is probably easier; I just tried it and it seemed so, although if you take care of the KEY you should be fine. The KEY to either, is to get west of the edge of the wall dividing the 2 rooms in the top left from the middle left before the roaches of the section you are leaving get past there, that way again, you only have to deal with roaches from one direction. If you do not go west far enough you WILL die. Whichever you choose carefully clear out the section then go to the other, being careful not to step far enough east to release the ones in the very bottom. Once these are clear it should be a simple task to take out the roaches in the bottom left room and then the queen and then you've completed the room. I did not step on the checkpoint once, as it always seemed to be more dangerous than it was worth. Congratulations, and good luck with the rest of the dungeon. If you would like to try starting from the lower left, it can also be done, just remember to get far enough into the rooms you are clearing to limit the roaches that can get to you as much as possible, for me however, it was definitely harder.
If after trying this for a while you still can't get it, I will post a demo, but you wont feel nearly as good about yourself with a demo. nor will you learn as much, which is key if you want to solve the rest of the dungeon without a demo. And I for one will not post a demo for every hard room you encounter.
Hope this was helpful, and Happy Smiting!

*sigh* spent too long writing this post, and the solution got given by Mr. Concise-Mushroom there...
