Same reason the Best Ad Man Ever's face is purple, and Erik's face is purple. For some reason, they don't use normal skin tones when drawing avatars.

I meant my post as an explanation of the purple faces. And the slayer's face is purple as well, if I recall correctly.

Erik explained this in the cover of the Journey's End SmS. Basically, his face used to be grey, because he only had a 16-bit palette to work with. Hence, he couldn't get the normal skin colour, so he used grey. Beethro's face isn't purple.

I think it must have been more of a 16-color palette (think EGA or high-res VGA). A 16-bit palette would've been 65536 colors, which surely would have been plenty...

If you want a canonical answer, then it's because they are from the surface, and the main Eighth's skin color is purple.

The slayers, however, are vat-born, so maybe it's some substance mix that created their purple face.

This may explain things.

Journey's End CD Cover states:
The palette in MSPaint only offered 16 colors at that time, and none of them were flesh tones... the closest I could get to skin was grey. So Beethro got grey skin.
