I recently joined the ranks of those who get the forum posts e-mailed to them, and I think I like it. I also think I would like the option to have all PMs e-mailed to me too, with a link in it taking me to the Reply PM page. As I said this would be an option, most likely with the default setting to be off.

Another option might be to have the PM notification at the top of the page so I more readily notice it when I come to the forum.

You could do what I did: Disable PM notification, and enable e-mail notification. Your e-mail address doesn't show up on the page. I don't really like the PMs--it's just another inbox to check.

Well, I don't really mind the PMs...I like being able to discuss some things with people without having to invade their e-mail box. And this way they know it relates to DROD, and isn't some more of that Oneiromancer spam that's been going around. (How dare they ruin my good name!)

So I'd rather keep the PM option open if I can. But of course your solution would make a PM e-mailing option unnecessary.
