Budapest Defenders -- Here it is.

And trust me, it's quite good.

And here's yet another one -- Vector TD. The kindof unique thing about this one is that it forces you to use different kinds of towers.

Enjoy!

Playing all these TD games of late makes me want to whip up a DROD-based version (though I don't actually have the time for this for a long while, at least). Hmm...I wonder whether some levels with certain mechanics can be crafted in the DROD level editor.

I think that The Mining Business takes some inspiration from Tower Defense games, but I don't think it's exactly the same. I'd love to see a DROD-based game from that genre. :)

Anyway, I think I'll go give Vector TD a go and see what I think of it.

Vector TD is probably one of the best TD's I've played.

Well if you think about it, you could have a array of stalwarts, mimics and decoys that block the way to a vulnerable halph...

Problem is to have a control system that is fun, challenging and intuitive.

I agree - but is it just me, or does this most recent one get impossibly hard impossibly fast? I manged to get to wave 18 once, but had no chance after that. :?

For the first half, as far as I can tell you need a very specific cocktail of towers.

I've been able to get to level 50 with 95 health remaining, after a bunch of experimentation on the easiest map. I'm not sure how to proceed from there, though, because I took 150 damage from that level. Well, I would have if hadn't been dead already from the first 100.

I've been trying off and on for the past few months now... :)

Congrats... got as far as 43.
Thanks! For the record, the strategy is to get the interest up to 12 (or even 15, perhaps) right away, and avoid spending money at all costs. I built two of the best red ones as soon as I could afford them, and didn't spend any more money until at least 20 levels later - towards the end, I had over $40,000, and was therefore getting almost $5000 in interest for every wave sent. Then, when I finally had to spend money, I was able to get 8 best red ones and 8 best purple ones, all upgraded to 3, 6 of each having a +100% damage and the other 2 having +50% damage.

If I didn't restrict myself to red towers and didn't buy those two boosters, I'm sure I could have done 2M.

I haven't been able to beat the hard layouts of Vector TD yet, but I finished all the others...barely on the medium ones. I think the finished the easiest level with 9 million points.

Given that you realize this, I'm surprised to see that your final cash total was so low :)

Every time you earn interest, you also earn about twice that many points (the difference appears to be due to rounding), so at least on the easier levels keeping around a huge bankroll earns you far more points than you'll get just for destroying the vectoids. The penalty for losing lives is also fairly minor (you lose as many points as you would've received for killing the enemy), so it's (probably; I haven't done the math) not worth spending cash early on if the only thing you're not going to destroy on a wave is the bonus guy (assuming that you can get it when it comes around again--those things have some serious damage reduction).

I'm also not sure when upgrades are the way to go, vs. buying another tower. I've seen notes elsewhere that suggest that a second tower is always better, and I think I agree -- all other things being equal. However, there are many potential inequalities....

(I, too, haven't finished any of the hard maps).

I had considerably more around level 48 (maybe $50,000), but spent most of it right at the end just to make sure I didn't die... again (I only had 8 lives left, iirc). I never really saved up my money since I wanted to be sure I didn't die.

Having said that, I should also recall that there is no point in saving any money during wave 50, since you don't get a final interest/score payment (yet another thing on the game's list of scoring inelegances).

So just for fun, I tried the opposite strategy - not building any of the towers in the 3rd row, and not upgrading anything. I didn't lose any lives until 42, but I lost 19 lives on 42, and 1 on 43 - exactly one of them got through with exactly no green bar left :angry

Yeah, the L1 blue towers are great. The L2 ones don't seem as useful, though, since they only affect one unit per (slow) shot and cost more.

I've played around with that as well. It works well up until about 21 or 22, and then the HP inflation gets wildly ahead of the rate of damage increase you get from buying single towers.

I also retract what I said earlier about upgrading; last night I think I managed to convince myself of the exact opposite :blush The times when you want more towers rather than to upgrade seem to be when the tower has side effects, such as the L1 blues (which are awesome), or when the upgraded tower would be grossly overkilling whatever it's hitting (you'd rather spread out the damage).

Yeah - that worked A LOT better! I didn't upgrade anything until after 48 - I had more than twice the money I needed to upgrade them all to 10 at that point, so I did (I didn't dream of doing it during a wave, since it lagged SOO much without trying to do things). As a side note, the way it ended, there was literally nothing to spend money on without selling something first.

I think I've just about optimized Switchback. I probably overspent when buying the third red rocket, and I think a couple of the blue towers are unnecessary, but at least I can see now how scores in this neighborhood are possible for this map.
