Here's my idea for a game that was inspired by a clip for a show I saw on TV the other day.

The current player has to state three facts about themselves, two of these should be completely true and one should be false. Everyone else can then guess which is the lie.

I'm going to go against the grain and suggest that rank points aren't awarded to the first person to guess correctly, as this should be more about generating discussion rather than a race to guess first. However, feel free to award points to people who come up with interesting facts at your discression. Asking questions to try and deduce the correct answer is perfectly acceptable.

First person to guess correctly gets to have the next go.

Not only do we have fun, but we get to learn some interesting facts about each other. If people think this might better belong on the anything board, I'm sure that can be arranged.

----------------------------

1. I am a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)
2. I am a Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)
3. I am a Cisco Certified Network Analyst (CCNA)

Not very interesting, but it'll get us started.

Steve.

any focus on "first to guess correctly" pretty much means that the first three people to post will all guess something different, one of them gets to go next, even if someone later does a clever thing and guesses via a 'good reason' instead of 'pick a number'.

I want to say '1' is the lie, because anyone with ethics and knowledge of cisco products would avoid ms products :)

silver: I guess that's why our over-engineered analyst hacker does *not* want that sort of 'first past the post' racing.

I'm putting my marbles on 3 myself, as I think the title is slightly wrong (it should be a Cisco Certified Network Associate, not an Analyst). So, that part just seems a little bit fishy.

Funny enough you are both wrong. If I had bothered to look slightly to the left I would have written Cisco Certified Network Associate, but never mind.
I've been lucky enough that my work has paid for a lot of external training for me over the years, but for some reason my manager didn't like the idea of sending me on a hacking course. His loss.

I suppose the best way to continue is to open it up to anyone who wants to go next. Any takers?

Can I do a variation in which 1 is the truth, and the others, lies?

The question is, I wonder: how can you tell when a round is over?

I'm tempted to put forth:
1. I'm spending next weekend in Ann Arbor for the National Puzzlers' League convention.
2. I spent a weekend last year in San Antonio for the National Puzzlers' League convention.
3. I spent a weekend two years ago in Los Angeles for the National Puzzlers' League convention.
but it seems kind of mundane. (Though two of those are true, one false.)

I'd also be tempted to put forth
1. I've seen every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
2. I've seen every episode of Firefly.
3. I've seen every episode (so far) of the new Doctor Who.
but you'd have to know me better to make educated guesses, and besides, if you questioned me, you'd probably give away bits of the one I haven't seen every episode of.

Shame; I like lying. I should think of something...

I suppose it's up to the person who put the question to use their judgement. If a a coversation starts up about the interesting facts, it is fine to let it go for a while. Otherwise you can give the answer straight away if someone guesses it.

Since noone else has had a go yet, I'll try again....

1. I've punched Henry Cooper.
2. I've had a go on Joey Dunlop's bike.
3. I've player a round of darts with Phil Taylor.

Steve.

I'd say #2 is wrong... The reason is that it (probably) takes the longest, and Joey Dunlop does nothing in the meantime(well... he signs autographs or something).

Probably 1... why would you punch him in the first place?

Errr... 'cause he's a boxer?
It's something like: "Hey you! Yeah, you! I punched Henry Cooper and he didn't even dare strike back. So don't you mess with me you big [insert as many insults as possible here]"

...which is sufficient reason for him to do publicity stunts where you can "punch" him. like Houdini used to do.

Surprisingly enough, everyone is wrong again!

1. As Dex and silver guessed, it was a publicity stunt in a local supermarket many years back. I don't remember it myself as I was very young at the time, but I have seen the photos.

2. Joey Dunlop used to race regularly at Kirkistown race track in Northern Ireland, and I would go to watch with my dad and his mates as often as we could make it. This usually ended with us in the pits checking out the bikes and chatting to the riders. So I got to sit on Joey and other riders bikes a few times. I didn't actually ride them, but then I didn't say that.

3. I've never met Phil Taylor, and if I did, I wouldn't embarress myself by attempting to play darts against him!

Someone else can have a go now.

Steve.

Well, I was definitely expecting this thread to be larger by now, but I guess not. Anyway, here's three from me:

1. I know John Travolta's brother.
2. I've been to England, France, and Italy.
3. My first word as a baby was "basketball."

I would think #3 is false. I'm pretty sure it's not possible for a baby's first word to have 3 syllables.

I say John Travolta's brother. I've heard some pretty strange first words in my time.

Maybe 1... I don't even know who John Travolta is!

For information on John Travolta, check this page.

Anyway, just like with Steve, the lie is the only statement that no one guessed.

1. John Travolta's older brother Joey recently did a two week film camp at St. Mary's College in Moraga, California. I attended the camp, so I got to know Joey.

2. I've never been outside the United States. Simple as that.

3. Once when I was about fifteen months old, my dad was watching the NCAA and I was sitting in a high chair near the TV. At some point, I just blurted out "basketball." Then I didn't say much for some time afterwards.

Someone else may go now.
