Try this one:

1. A reality tv show producer
2. A gangster
3. A delusion

Uhoh. Speaking of spoilers.

The actor is Ed Harris; the movies are The Truman Show, State of Grace, and--because it's not exactly clear from the start that he's a delusion:

Correct, although I was thinking of "A History of Violence" for #2.
Uhoh. Speaking of spoilers
Yeah, I was wondering how to word that clue and stay within the spirit of Rule #2. (Is a delusion "pretending" to be someone?) So I figured the film is old enough that most people would know about it. Glad you posted the answer in secret tags though.

Yeah, I think using the secret tags is a great idea whenever possible, though I will have to say that, upon looking at my original post, I left a bit of a spoiler in my list of characters for Robert Picardo.

But it's old enough that, if someone was ever going to see it, they probably already would have by now.

Well, in honor of AlefBet's a professional predictor with perfect knowledge of tomorrow, I offer:

* A professional predictor with imperfect knowledge of tomorrow
* A Holy Roman Emperor
* The head of a much smaller institution, on a personal (and ill-fated) manhunt for the title character

Okay, I'm going to make the guess "Jeffrey Jones" since according to Google he played "Joseph II" and he was also in The Hunt for Red October, a manhunt of sorts, but I don't recall him being at the head of the hunt and the US/SU military forces are hardly small or personal, so it's a bit of a wild guess.

How about:
Richard Harris as Emperor Marcus Aurelius from Gladiator

That's a Roman emperor, not a Holy Roman emperor. Different empires.

Besides, I don't see how he fits the other two roles.

Thanan - I think you need to post a hint here...

Yeah, I have no idea how he'd fit them either, but I figured a wild guess beats no guess.

I almost hate to grant it, but yes, it is Jeffrey Jones. He was Joseph II in Amadeus, one of my five favorite movies. +1 to the first person to identify each of the other two movies. (I wanted to include Beetlejuice, but for the life of me I couldn't actually figure out what he does that in that movie.)

Right on both counts. (In Ed Wood, he played Criswell, the professional psychic--the Jeane Dixon of his time, though Jeane Dixon may have already been the Jeane Dixon of his time. He was apparently terrible.

Well, I guess with my wild guess it's up to me to put another one out. Here goes:

* A juror with flexible ethics.
* A space fighter pilot.
* A fireman who cheats fate.

Yes, very true. Number 2, by the way, was Enemy Mine.

Here's another wild guess. Harry Shannon?
1. Witness to a murder
2. ...
3. The Outcasts of Poker Flat

Edit: Another wild guess could be Marc Strange for:
1. Run
2. ...
3. Act of Vengeance?

A huge (I think) hint, because once again I'm heading up north tomorrow and I want someone to guess it quick: in two of the movies the actor's character was pregnant.

Frances McDormand?

Guess based solely on her role in Fargo.

You might have got it. She was a miner in North Country.

The other movie seems to be Wonder Boys, in which she played a dean. Or chancellor, or something.

Voyager is correct.

1. Fargo
2. Wonder Boys (University chancellor)
3. North Country

Your turn.

(Just noticed I'm shy of mods. One now, one later, 'kay?)

Hooray! I guess that was a pretty big hint. I don't know about anyone else, but when I think "pregnant police chief," I think of Marge Gunderson. Okay, here's the next one:

1. A chief inspector
2. A comic book author
3. An aspiring novelist

Paul Giamatti? Based solely on the (wonderful) Amercian Splendor.

EDIT: Wait, he's a writer in Sideways. Much more confident now :)

Paul Giamatti it is. I didn't think that one would take too long. I loved American Splendor too. The other one I was thinking of was The Illusionist, which wasn't tremendously great, but still a pretty good time.

And now I'm in the same predicament as noma. Maybe I should have checked before guessing. I'll give you the second point as soon as I can.

edit: oh, hey, thanks for the extra points, whoever that was.

Hmm. This one might be a bit trickier.

1) A gang leader in Oakland
2) One half of an inept angelic duo
3) One half of a duo of Federal Agents
