I've been butting my head up against this with no luck. I can't tell whether I'm supposed to be spending most of my time clearing space next to pits, going after roaches, or securing passage back out the room after I kill all the bugs. Could somebody give me a clue about how I go about this?

Cannot figure out how to get to the bottom exit before the briars consume it. No matter how I conserve my steps, I just cannot seem to get there in time...a hint would really help.

The way I did it was to Efficient cutting of crumbly walls will help... Hope that helps

Hey, thanks for taking time to respond. I'm actually tracing my way back from 1 North, so all I have to deal with this go around are the briars, which are giving me a heck of a fight. How did you manage this room on your return trip?

Haven't played this hold for ages, but I do remember a lot of running around before actually killing anything so can't quite remember *how* I got to that start. I seem to remember though that it would have been on the way back...

Escape lots and then tackle stuff on your return. Either way, I have the most optimised recorded solution so I guess that's a good starting point

On the return trip, you should be entering from the east side and exiting to the south. To successfully escape, you can't make any extra moves.

** Enter from the south side of the east door.

** Stay as close to the briar as you can without getting killed. The briar expands when it has no more red immature parts. When all the red has gone away, that's the time to step away from the briar.

** It should take you exactly 25 moves to escape.

Hi again...stood in place (Wait button) at the east entrance threshold and counted how many "keystrokes" it took for the briars to cover the south exit. On the 20th "stroke" the threshold was covered. What am I missing?

You are missing the fact that briar grows slower when part of it is next to pits. You must thus destroy some walls on your way out.

EDIT: Note that I played this hold a few months ago, and may therefore be wrong.

No destruction of walls is necessary to get through this room on the return trip. (Though it'll take you slightly longer to do so.)

You have until Turn 27 before the south exit is blocked off, so the latest you can escape is by Turn 28. Dunno where you're getting 20 turns from. There are no bugs with the growth in this room, and thus no possibility of differences between versions here.

(Also, it doesn't matter how north or south you start from the east exit, since it takes the same number of turns to get round the corner.)

EDIT: Oh, wait. The only time it takes 20 turns for the briar to block off the south exit is when the Blue Gate isn't open.

So... uh... complete the entire level first before backtracking, yeah?

It may be that I have a strange disorder making me see blue stuff, but the blue gate most definitely seems to be in the Eastern part of the room.

Do correct me if I'm wrong though.

Don't know what I was thinking...duh...the blue gates are right here in the room. But, there are no roaches in this room to defeat (I did that on the way through the first time), so how do I discover what still needs to be done so the gates will drop?

I just journeyed all the way over to 1 North again and then came back to 1N4W to see if there were any enemies I had not defeated. All the rooms contained nothing but briars. So, if I have not defeated something, it must be south of here, and I cannot get to the south passage. I am truly puzzled.

Your CaravelNet account (very helpful thing that is) says that you have yet to upload a score for Under the Library : 2 North, 1 West, which is a required room.

You may wish to direct your search there.

Thanks, that was the problem...after conquering 2N1W I was able to exit "Under the Library." I guess those CaravelNet accounts are helpful.

I actually need to be able to get back to the exit after all the roach queens run away. The briar growth prevents me from doing so.


I guess I don't have to clear the broken walls first. Just got to get back to the unbroken broken walls without dieing. Yeah, that's what I'll do.

My question's more with the challenge of "reach the eastern exit." Outside of the vagueness, I presume it's asking me to get to it when I first enter the room from the south, but how would I go about doing that?

Yes, of course, here it is - the first demo I have ever recorded by the way, and I haven't played this room for a while so I had to stop and think a couple of times.

As you may see I am able to reach the eastern exit but by the the briar has bloacked the path out.

In the meanwhile I have finished the room skipping the challenge and played other unfinished holds.
