I conquered Deep Uncturage, and I got told what to ask for by the pit thing. But I can't get myself to say that here. Is there a different library, or what am I doing wrong?

Here's my dilemma. I've beaten The Grand Library, The Uncturage, Deep Uncturage, Under the Library, and Interlude: Negotiations. Whenever I go back to the Library, the desk clerk keeps saying, "Thank you for patronizing our establishment." That's it. So finally I went back to the city, where there was this guy looking for his brother, and Beethro says that he didn't see him in any of the rooms, blah blah.

Now what? I wandered around everywhere and nothing new has opened up, I still can't get a name, I can't go past that door with the two huge orbs... Grrr! Hint?

I think the guy with the brother drops you a hint...but in case he doesn't...

I have exactly the same problem as Jason. Following the instructions given at the end of DU, I went back to the Library, but I got the same reception from First Librarian as the first visit.

Taking Zophos' advice I went back to the last room of DU and worked my way back to the Library again, and again the same response - as though it was my first visit.

What have I missed or done wrong?

Have you tried leaving the Library, then coming straight back in again (without restoring)?

That's really weird. It sounds like whatever scripting it is that detects whether you've been to DU is not working in your case... don't know how...

Maybe it's related to your problems with upgrading from the demo somehow?

So much time has elapsed that I've no longer any idea where this takes place. (I've been out of town off and on, etc.) Where do I find this "guy with the brother"?

I could, I guess, restore the game back to the beginning, but boy, would that be tedious.

Thanks . . . . but I'm still stuck. (How stupid is that - can't even walk through rooms properly.) In The City, 1N, 2N, 3N, 4N all have no exits. 5N might, but the gate there tells me "No name, no access."

And no, I don't think "Pit Thing" told me anything. Or if it did, this was more than two weeks ago and I lost all memory of the conversation.

So i've got the same problem. I've finished the Unctorage and been to the pit (many times) the pit monster didn't tell me anything particular that i remember. Then i go to the library the librarian tells me he has already searched for me once and is to busy. Bethrow says he has to go back the the Unctorage but when i get there is says all done Exit and the pit is silent.
I tried leaving the library and going back in but no change.
what am i missing?

Remember to finish the Deep Uncturage, not just the Uncturage. The stairway to Deep Uncturage is in 1S 4E of the Uncturage.

In Deep Uncturage: 2N 2E, the Pit Thing will direct you back the Grand Library to ask about butterflies. That starts you down the road to Under the Library.

If you don't remember what a character said in some room, you can use the Restore function to restart the room from the first time you saw it. That will let you see all the dialogue again. (Remember to restore to your furthest save when you're done so you don't redo any work you've already done.)

Ah thanks, i had finished the deep as well but i avoided the exit as i didn't want to move past this part of the dungeon. I assumed it was like some levels of JTRH where you can't go back again.

The hold has a few temporary points of no return. The point when you're permanently locked out of returning to The City is... well I don't want to spoil it so I'll try to say something that will only make sense when you get there. It happens when you see a very conspicuous rope that wasn't there before.
