Heh. I know someone whose school tried to have a moment of silence, but the principal went on for so long about who we should remember and cherish &c. that as he was pronouncing the word "silence" the bell rang to signal class change.

In that attack about 400 people died... That's sad. However, nobody has ever mentioned that only after the first days of the war that followed, same amount of afghan people were killed. People should think wider...

Well, I suppose it isn't too late to ask: where were you when it happened? Myself, I was asleep (it was only about 7:30 AM in California when the second tower collapsed, and being a little more than ten and a half, I wouldn't have been up that early), and I remember that I had a strange dream right before I woke up and my mom came into my room to break the news.

I was chatting with a bunch of Americans on IRC at the time; it was late evening here. It was quite surreal hearing about it and then seeing it all happen "live" on TV half an hour later (Adelaide is half an hour behind the eastern AU states, with national TV and radio generally delayed to match, and although they can break in and do things live, apparently this didn't qualify).

On the way to campus, I went to fill up my car with gas. At the pump, they had one of those little TV monitors some stations feature. As soon as the screen came to life, I saw the gaping hole and the flames. It looked totally unreal -- the last thing I was expecting to see. They announced how there had been an attack, and before I found out the specifics, the monitor turned off, since I was done filling up. I raced off to find out what was going on. I was worried there had been some kind of full scale assault on America.

We didn't watch the news that morning, so O was heading off to my book group, I was 11 at the time. The book was the unabridged version of Gulliver's Travels. We get there and they're talking about planes crashing into buildings, and I naively ask, "What movie are we talking about?"

I seem to recall hearing that World War III had started. Which I immediately rejected, because conflicts don't escalate quite that fast. Unless they're nuclear, in which case we would have died, given our location. I first got facts when I got home for the day.

IIRC, I first heard of it when my Spanish teacher walked in and told us that there had been an attack on the World Trade Center. It was kind of stunning, but it wasn't quite complete until I watched at home some footage of the burning buildings and noticed that some people were falling; obviously preferring jumping over being burned alive.

I was at home when it happened. I can't remember exactly how I got to know about it, but when I did, I turned on the TV and saw it live on BBC World (I started watching before the second plane crashed into the South Tower).

Quite an interesting afternoon/evening, that.

With no disrespect to the dearly departed, I would like to point out that nobody is a victim to terrorism without their consent. Because the people killed are not victims. The people that change their routine out of fear are.

... Changing your routine to pay your respects or to seek vengeance is not changing your routine out of fear.

I can sort of see what he was getting at - the people who decide to live in fear are victims in a way - but to say that the people who died weren't is both horribly wrong and horribly insensitive. So was saying it here, of all places...
