I really can't figure these Goblins. Seeing there are no other posts for this room, I must really be missing something. Any, not too subtle hints, would be great!

My observations:

1. I swing and they run.

2. I can put them off for a while by getting them to chase me around their huts.

3. they can move backwards.

4. I can kill one of them.

5. If I get them in a corner I can kill them.

Any other hints for maniputation?

How many moves before they come for me?

One thing you may want to seriously consider is downloading the Advanced Concepts hold and running through the Goblins portion. There's a lot of very useful information in there that will probably answer all of your questions.

The shorter answer is that goblins are tricksy creatures, capable of going around some corners, and they are afraid of your sword (and so will try to go around it). It is possible to learn enough about goblin movement quirks that handling one goblins in a space like this room should be no problem, but a fair amount of that is probably going to require experimentation.

I do think that Jacob's Goblin rooms are hugely important. You'll need a TCB engine, but that's downloadable for free (as is the hold).

Thank you for the suggestion. I found the hold, downloaded it.
I am afraid it is for Windows users, I am on Mac OSX.
DROD software says it was created on a later version.
I have the latest available version of DROD for Macintosh.

The latest patch for JtRH is for windows only.

Well, perhaps I can find another hold dealing with Goblins...

Actually, Advanced Concepts is a The City Beneath hold, as can be seen on it's page on the Holds boards.

You can, however, grab the TCB demo (conveniently available in Windows, Mac OS X and Linux flavours) and give Advanced Concepts a spin in it... :)

There's a simple goblin trick - how to kill them one at a time in a 3-tile corridor - that'll get you through this room, and maybe some others as well.

Then move east just far enough to dislodge the second goblin, retreat to the entrance and do the trick again. Repeat for the remaining goblins.

Most excellent! I have TCB up and rolling, and opened the Advanced Concepts hold.

The first level deals with golems, and I know this might not be possible, but is there any way to skip to the level dealing with goblins?

I want to finish JtRH before I commit to TCB.

This is going rather far afield for this particular room, but I'll just note this: the Advanced Concepts hold is designed in a hub style, so that you can exit from any annex and enter a different one, pretty much at any time. (Hopefully at literally any time, but it's possible that the hold is not perfect.)

So all you have to do is circle around the main hub until you find the entrance to the goblin annex. I think it's one of the ones to the far south.

(Also, though, CuriousShyRabbit's tip is an excellent one.)

That helped immensely, thank you.
