So, thoughts about the entries:

Overall, not the most successful of contests. A lot of the entries were similar to each other, and overall I didn't feel like I saw anything particularly new here - there was some good stuff but it's all techniques and effects we've seen before. I would have loved for at least one entry to invent some new way to make a hold pretty. Still, I did enjoy some of the entries a lot. Comments in the order I played them:

I find that mildly tacky, myself: something of a waste of time for Jason and for voters. If you had a legitimate but flawed entry, sure, but--just so you'd get credit? You mean, just so you'd get one step closer to the prize pile?

In any case, since the contest stated...

Ah! That, I understand completely.

Also, a few thoughts on the problems of aesthetics in DROD (or at least in DROD 2.0), which I'll secret in case someone thinks reading them might influence the voting.

OK, that was long. But I noted before that, when Eytanz says "I would have loved for at least one entry to invent some new way to make a hold pretty", I myself couldn't think what he could possibly have in mind. I wanted to lay out some of the reasons that I couldn't. I'll end with a question--and this may not be the best place to ask, but at the moment it's the most obvious: what can you do to get around the limitations I discuss in the secret text, i.e. to make a hold "pretty" in some new way?

I'll probably think of more a bit later but here are some examples:

- You could have combined pretty walls, obstacles and monsters with dancing. The dancers could have danced around you or the obstacles etc.

- Animated pics? Have a square and the inside be filled with npcs that switch on and off to make a moving flower or something.

EDIT: Attached is an example.

The trouble with both of these is that, as I noted in my post above, moving NPCs can be tricky to manipulate because so much depends on how quickly the player moves (and, in the case of dancers dancing around the player, whether the player gets in the way).

But more importantly, I'm not sure that either of these really meets Eytanz's criterion of "something new": animated art seems a minor variation on static art; dancers moving around obstacles/players seems a minor variation on dancers in an enclosed space.

Don't read too much into my suggestion of "something new"; as you point out, there's a limit to what can be done. It's just that I was curious as to whether anyone will have made something really surprising. Clearly, I didn't have any such ideas, or I would have submitted myself.

People did, I think, what they could: Techant, for instance, did a nice job with fireworks/dancing/wraithwing training, but it's clear how limited she felt. The fireworks, for instance, don't really have the proper effect if you press "wait" once every ten seconds; you have to hold down the key. The wraithwing, in contrast, doesn't have the proper effect if you hold down the key; you have to press it slowly. Similarly for the dancing: hold down the "wait" key, and the dancers are literally out of the room before the leader has had a chance to say "Take your partner...."

Thanks for noticing.:) I spent alot of time working on the whole design and half of it on the scripting I think. I never could quite get that copy/paste to work for NPC's. So I had to put all those guys in there one by one. I wanted to do more but the lack of control just made it too frustrating.

It was very hard to come up with something fresh with the limited floors and walls. I really tried to get the fireworks to not leave anything behind but nothing worked. It was one of the new ideas I had.

I guess for puzzles it works but for something off topic it is not as good. I tried to not have any puzzles only monsters were for effect (wraithwing training or games) or to get the blue doors to appear.

My voting:

I agree that I was disappointed with the way my entry turned out. I figured that symmetry would be a good way to make a castle aesthetically pleasing, and this I achieved by way of fourfold symmetry.

...or at least I would have. Unfortunately, DROD's rooms are a very imperfect rectangle, and the bitmaps aren't symmetrical either. However, I figured by having the top floor conform to the supports at the entrance, and having no dungeon area be very far from the entrance of light, monster invasions could be deterred.

Now to actually play the entries and go "My, how cute, that's much better than my entry." I'm hoping there's going to be a compilation, but if there isn't I won't really complain seeing as it's not as necessary for something like this.

First an aside on my scoring, I scored down fairly harshly for having monsters, or the necessity to kill monsters. What’s that? I had monsters in my own entry? Well, I guess I couldn’t resist either. Although in my defense, the monsters in my entry were there for plot purposes, and need not have been slain.

My comments:
