Although its a pretty sure bet as to what Mattcrampy-ies and Schik's is, I was just curious as to which quote you have a soft spot for.

Mine personally is " Growing old is compulsory, growing up is optional"

How about you?

Besides the one in my quote, I'll go with "Early to rise and early to bed - makes a man healthy, wealthy and dead."

Aside from the line in my signature, I'd have to go with "Gregor Samsa awoke one morning and discovered he had turned into a giant cockroach."
For the sake of completeness, my wife's favorite quote comes from Mark Twain. "And what, sir, would we be without women? Scarce. Very scarce."

I have to say that this is one of the saddest stories I ever read. And essential.

I don't want to hijack the thread and turn it into a Kafka discussion, but "The Metamorphosis" is far more than a brilliant opening line. I agree with you. It is essential reading.

Heh, my mother used to say "Late to bed, late to rise, makes a man sick, poor, and stupid"

I kind of like Adam Savage's (from Mythbusters) "I reject your reality and substitute my own."

Maybe I should do that some time (to clarify things: I mean the "reading it" part, not the "transform into a giant cockroach" part)...

And while we're at it - here's something not entirely dissimilar, if a wee bit shorter... ;)

np: Yppah - Almost In That Category (You Are Beautiful At All Times)

I have a gigantic .TXT file on my computer filled with all kinds of quotes.

"milk for the noteman" is one.

"cruel and evil cereal" is another

"TERROR YAK!" is another

"Get out your bottles and climb it." is another

"Beware the circling guard." is a good one.

"don't straddle a crack you silly barmpot!" is another

There is more, but it's not the kind of things you want to hear.

Over the years I have forgotten the original contexts of all these statements.

"Or I might be able to catch one, a little girl for example, and half strangle her, three quarters, until she promises to give me my stick, give me soup, empty my pots, kiss me, fondle me, smile to me, give me my hat, stay with me, follow the hearse weeping into her handkerchief, that would be nice. I am such a good man, at bottom, such a good man, how is it that nobody ever noticed it?" - Samuel Beckett

"Everything is possible and yet nothing is. All is permitted and yet again, nothing. No matter which way we go, it is no better than any other. It is all the same whether you achieve something or not, have faith or not, ... whether you cry or remain silent. There is an explanation for everything, and yet there is none. Everything is both real and unreal, normal and absurd, splendid and insipid. There is nothing worth more than something else, nor any idea better than another. Why grow sad from one’s sadness and delight in one’s joy? ... Love your unhappiness and hate your happiness. Mix everything up. ... All gain is a loss, and all loss is a gain. Why always expect a definite stance, clear ideas, meaningful words?" - Emil Cioran

Oh, and one more:
"ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US"

I have a smallish txt file with phrases that I may or may not paint on a tshirt at some point. Near the top of the list:

I was the fifth teletubby

Safe when handled as directed

Faster than a tall building!

Here's one for confusing people I like in early January:

Happy you near!

And finally, one from a friend of mine who was very tired at the time:

Nobody expects the Spanish Intifada!

On a T-shirt: If this shirt is witty enough maybe someone will finally love me.

You're just not sure how to respond to that. Which means that whoever's wearing the shirt gets to derive pleasure out of the wit they bought.

A lot of the phrases I love simply because they're so stupidly funny (Hint: Most are from Trailer Park Boys), but I came upon an interesting quote today in my math book:

Is there will to have no will?

Which reminds me to start another topic about the math I'm on right now. Perfect!

Sorry for double post, but there's a really well-known French saying which happens to include the town where I spent quite a few years... Try this for rhyming ;)

Il était une fois,
Une marchande de foie,
Qui vendait du foie,
Dans la ville de Foix...
Elle se dit ma foi,
C'est la première fois
Et la dernière fois,
Que je vends du foie,
Dans la ville de Foix

Yup... I actually lived in Foix. It's strange how many French people know this saying but have no clue where Foix is. It's only 10K inhabitants and lies in the Pyrenees.
