I can't get the guards to break the tar - any advice?

I haven't gotten to here, but maybe if you caused a pile-up of guards in one of the corners, possibly using roaches to help, you might be able to scoot around them and keep some on the west side. From there, the not-stabbing part of their algorithm ought to get one guard stacked up above the rest, which could move up and hit the tar.

I repeat, I haven't gotten to here.

Yeah, that's what I've been trying to do, but however I do it the guards end up not stabbing the tar - either their swords are faced the wrong way or they don't step next to it.
