I generally give Small Gods to anyone I want to get into Pratchett. That and Soul Music are my two favorites of his, although I also have a soft spot for The Wee Free Men and Hat Full of Sky.
Good Omens is terrific, and
The Wee Free Men has great humor (the Pictsies) and a wonderful protagonist. I was disappointed by
A Hat Full of Sky, not nearly so engrossing as
The Wee Free Men.
I'll recommend Robert Asprin's Myth books (beginning with
Another Fine Myth) as good fantasy humor, although I haven't read them in years and I recall the later books peter out in quality.
In boardgames, I'll second the love of Settlers of Cataan and Puerto Rico, and I'll add Guillotine, Munchkin, and the classic Cribbage. There's something about sitting around a table with friends that hasn't yet been matched by computer gaming for me. Although my wife and I often play games "
together"
, even if one of us, usually me, actually works the controls. We played Baldur's Gate this way and enjoyed the story and making non-combat decisions together.
Oh, and Gloom is a relatively new card game that's great for storytelling, with definite inspiration from Edward Gorey.
